Effective Surgical Treatment for Nasal Polyps and Chronic Sinusitis: Septoplasty with FESS in a 48-Year-Old Male

Effective Surgical Treatment for Nasal Polyps and Chronic Sinusitis: Septoplasty with FESS in a 48-Year-Old Male

Inflamed nasal passages and multiple episodes of sinusitis that last for months can lead to the growth of benign polyps. The symptoms are quite uncomfortable and often require a visit to the ENT specialist in Navi Mumbai for proper evaluation and appropriate treatment.

If sinusitis or polyps become frequent and are associated with a structural defect in the nose, surgical intervention may be necessary. In this post, we’ve discussed both issues in detail. Here’s a look.

Case Study of a 48-year-old Patient

A 48-year-old patient walked into our clinic with complaints of constant blockage of the nose (left side) and colds that would keep recurring for over a year. We recommended a CT scan, the results of which showed polyps, sinusitis, and a deviated septum.

We recommended a surgery called septoplasty to correct the deviated nasal septum and Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) to remove polyps and open up the sinus passages. The surgery was a success.

The deviated septum was corrected, polyps were successfully removed, and the sinuses were cleared. The patient reported improved breathing, reduced sinus infections, and an improved overall quality of life.

What are Nasal Polyps and Chronic Sinusitis?

Polyps are noncancerous, soft growths that develop in the nasal lining. Small polyps may not cause issues, but the larger ones can obstruct your nasal passage, making it difficult to breathe through the nose. The condition, in many cases, occurs with chronic sinusitis. The inflamed nasal passage makes polyps highly likely to form, which in turn worsens sinusitis. The cycle continues.

Symptoms

Polyps and chronic sinusitis can result in:

  • Runny nose
  • Blocked nose
  • Postnasal drip
  • Reduced sense of taste and smell
  • Snoring
  • Pain and pressure on the sinus points

What is Septoplasty with FESS?

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that fixes a deviated nasal septum by straightening it to improve airflow through both nostrils. FESS is a minimally invasive surgical approach that clears your sinuses and removes nasal polyps with an endoscope that’s inserted through the nose. It doesn’t involve large cuts or stitching, making it a highly effective treatment for recurring sinus infections.

Post-Surgical Life: Here’s What Happens

A deviated septum is a structural defect that can be corrected with surgery. Although medication for sinusitis, such as antihistamines, antibiotics, and nasal sprays, is suggested, surgery may be the most effective option for recurring infections, especially if they occur alongside polyps. Here’s what you can expect after a combined sinus surgery in Navi Mumbai (septoplasty + FESS):

  • Improves breathing
  • Reduces the likelihood of sinus infections
  • Offers significant relief from facial pressure and pain due to blocked sinuses
  • Improves your sense of taste and smell
  • Reduces the need for antibiotics, antihistamines, and other medications for recurring infections
  • Allows you to have better sleep

Chronic sinusitis with nasal polyps can affect your quality of life. The significant discomfort that won’t improve with medication can be relieved with septoplasty (if it occurs due to a deviated septum) and FESS.
